So this evening I had a lovely evening out on the patio of my country club, eating half priced appetizers with my daughters. The weather couldn’t be more perfect the atmosphere uplifting and a there were a generally pleasant group of people in the club.
Both girls had their 350 plus page books with them as they needed to achieve their reading goals for the day.
I had an unknown fellow club member come up to our table as their party of 4 sat next to us and made somewhat of a big deal of the fact that both of my girls had that “old school” thing, called a paper back book.
He talked with both girls asking them about their books, and what they were about, and then complimented me that they had them.
I was quick to add in passing that trust me they had their “technology time” as we call it early today so now they knew this was their reading time.
We enjoyed our shrimp, pretzel bites and quesadilla, hold the meat (Liv is vegetarian) and then once again about an hour into our meal, our friend came to our table astonished at how the girls had been non stop reading the entire time we were there. I too had been reading a pretty great online book I found interest in.
My primary answer to him when asked “how I did it?” Was that first I am blessed with two very good girls, second was that they attend a great school (Cambridge Christian School) but mainly I told him if I’ve learned anything as a parent I’ve learned the very best gift I can give my daughters is the gift of education.
Admittedly my brief conversation with him might have been influenced by a glass of happy hour wine, however in the end it got me thinking.
My daughters are doing simply what is required of them.
So what is required of us, what is it that we require of ourselves. Do we set the bar so low it is hardly an effort to move over, or do we set it so high that it is just that “dream” or “one day” idea? In the end my daughters show me that we will meet any level that is set before us, so why can’t that level be set so amazingly high that we achieve ALL that we want in this life?
